Why Strength Training is for YOU!

When you think strength training, you’re prone to images of beastly looking men and women who are the purest definition of “ripped”; their bodies exude strength as the muscles bulge and their veins pulse vividly for all to see. When you think strength training you think body builder, the manliest of men or the strongest of women. You think that’s not for me, or you think there’s no way I want to look quite like that. Well, let’s dispel some of those myths before they grow any larger! Here are a few truths to strength training and why it’s for EVERYONE!

  • Weight Loss. Believe it or not, strength training helps you to lose weight, more so than spending copious amounts of hours weekly on the treadmill. Think of it this way; muscle weighs more than fat, but because muscle is denser and smaller, your body looks leaner and less fatty. Building muscle actually burns calories, helping to keep the weight off.
  • Lean Muscle. The most obvious benefit of weight training is your muscles becoming more lean and stronger. Now, to dispel one common myth: strength training, if done a few times a week, does not cause you to look massively ripped. Strength training is used to tone your muscles, burn fat, and burn calories. You will definitely build muscle, but ladies won’t have to worry about looking mannish, and men won’t have to worry about looking like the Great Hulk.
  • Protecting Your Bones and Muscles. Strength training helps to keep your muscles and bones strong. The older we get, the more muscle and bone mass we lose, but by strength training we can reverse those aging affects. Your muscles will continue to be healthy and your bones will become stronger.
  • Balance Building. Believe it or not, yoga is not the only balance-building workout you can do. Strength training is fantastic for helping to improve and maintain your balance. Think of it this way, your body is building muscle in your thighs, glutes, and core by keeping you upright as you lift and move those weights. Therefore, your balance is improved as well.
  • Strength Training Doesn’t Require Weights. Contrary to popular beliefs, you don’t have to use massive amounts of weight to tone and strengthen your muscles. There is what’s called bodyweight strength training. For example, your mountain climbers, wall push-ups, lunges, squat jumps, and more are all bodyweight strength training exercises. What this means is, you are using your bodyweight as a strength training device. For example, with jump squats, you are having to lift your bodyweight as you squat and then jump, helping your thighs and glutes to gain muscle and strength.
